Florida Contractor Insurance FAQ

What insurance do Florida contractors need?+

Most Florida contractors need at minimum workers' compensation insurance and general liability insurance. Workers' comp is legally required for construction employers with one or more employees (including the owner). General liability is required by most general contractors, project owners, and licensing boards before work can begin. Some trades also need commercial auto, inland marine, and umbrella coverage.

How much does contractor insurance cost in Florida?+

Florida contractor insurance costs vary significantly by trade and payroll. Workers' comp rates range from under $5 per $100 of payroll for lower-risk trades to over $20 for roofing. General liability typically runs $800–$2,500 per year for small contractors. Bright Coast Insurance shops multiple carriers to find the most competitive rates for your specific class code and project type.

Can I get a same-day certificate of insurance in Florida?+

Yes. Bright Coast Insurance issues certificates of insurance the same business day in most cases. You can request a certificate through our online portal 24/7 or call/text us at (239) 323-0785 Monday through Friday, 8 AM–5 PM.

Does Florida require workers' comp for subcontractors?+

Yes. In Florida's construction industry, the general contractor is responsible for ensuring that all subcontractors have their own workers' compensation coverage. If a subcontractor does not have coverage, the general contractor's policy may be required to cover them, which can significantly increase the general contractor's premium. Always request certificates of insurance from every subcontractor before work begins.
