COI FAQs — Roofing Contractors

Why can't roofing contractors exempt officers from workers comp in Florida?

Florida Statute 440.02 explicitly excludes roofing contractors from the corporate officer exemption available to other construction trades. Every officer of a roofing company must be covered under a workers comp policy. This applies to both Florida-based and out-of-state roofing contractors working in Florida.

What GL limits do Florida roofing contractors need on their COI?

Most Florida general contractors require roofing subcontractors to carry at least $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate in general liability. Many large GCs and commercial projects require $2M / $4M. Some high-value projects require a $5M umbrella in addition to the base GL policy. Always confirm limits with your GC before binding coverage.

Do Florida roofing contractors need an additional insured endorsement on their COI?

Yes, in almost every case. Florida GCs require roofing subcontractors to add them as additional insured on both the GL and workers comp policies. This must be done before the COI is issued — you cannot add an additional insured retroactively. Bright Coast Insurance can add additional insured endorsements at the time of binding.

What is a certificate of insurance (COI) in Florida?

A certificate of insurance (COI) is a one-page document that summarizes your insurance coverage — policy numbers, coverage types, limits, and effective dates. In Florida, contractors are required to provide COIs to general contractors, property owners, and licensing boards before starting work. A COI is not a policy; it is evidence that a policy exists.

What insurance is required on a Florida COI for contractors?

Most Florida general contractors and job sites require workers compensation insurance and general liability insurance at minimum. Commercial auto is often required if you use vehicles on the job. Some projects require additional insured endorsements, umbrella/excess liability, or specific coverage limits (e.g., $1M per occurrence, $2M aggregate).
