Michigan requires coverage for employers with 3 or more employees, or any employer who regularly employs 1 or more workers for 35+ hours per week for 13 or more weeks during the year. Agricultural employers have separate thresholds. The Michigan Workers' Compensation Agency (WCA) enforces compliance and can issue stop-work orders.
Michigan uses NCCI class codes but has some state-specific variations. Notably, Michigan uses code 5538 for HVAC work (not 5537 as in Florida and most other states). Always verify the correct code with your carrier before binding coverage.
