Michigan Workers' Comp: 2026 Rate Decrease & Key Requirements

Michigan workers' compensation rates decreased an average of 9.3% effective January 1, 2026 — one of the largest rate decreases of any state this year. The decrease was driven by improved loss experience across most class codes, particularly in construction and manufacturing.

Michigan requires coverage for employers with 3 or more employees, or any employer who regularly employs 1 or more workers for 35+ hours per week for 13 or more weeks during the year. Agricultural employers have separate thresholds. The Michigan Workers' Compensation Agency (WCA) enforces compliance and can issue stop-work orders.

Michigan uses NCCI class codes but has some state-specific variations. Notably, Michigan uses code 5538 for HVAC work (not 5537 as in Florida and most other states). Always verify the correct code with your carrier before binding coverage.
